I'm not sure if anyone here can help me or not, this is not Quake related. I use Windows 8 and while looking at my File Explorer under the Network tab it showed a phone on my network that I do not have. I logged into my router and looked for it but it wasn't there. So is it possible to connect a phone to my computer without connecting to my router? If so, how do I keep them from connecting to my computer? How do I boot them off if it happens again. Like I said, the phone did not show up as connected to my router.

What I will say though is to make sure it's not your own phone. Windows not 100% reliable with descriptions.
Bluetooth?
Could also be a tablet instead of a mobile phone.
What is it called?
You could try googling it, because some phones have weird descriptions on a network device list.
If your a bit paranoid about it, change your wifi wpa/wep (or whatever you use) key

Update: <DocP> hmm. poor funky flava <DocP> you can connect with things like samsumg kies wirelessly <DocP> but I'd have thought you need permission to do so <wookster> I don't think it's anything major personally, but paranoia can set it <DocP> yeah <DocP> but if he's seeing it on his network he should be able to interrogate it <wookster> yea Will update as I go.

It's probably nothing. Maybe my computer is just confused. I'm sure it's not my phone though. The description of the phone said it was an Alcatel One Touch 4037t, I don't own one of those. I wish I'd written down the MAC address before it disappeared, that way I could have at least blocked the MAC via my router. It only showed up in Windows Explorer under the Networks subheading. I tried double clicking and right clicking and looking at "properties" but there was no option for removing or blocking the phone. On a scale of 1-10 I'm only about 3 on the paranoid scale right now.
Under the "network" subheading it says, "File sharing is turned off. Some network and file sharing devices might not be visible. Click to change..." I assume this means that even if a phone was connected to my computer they couldn't get any files from it, right?
Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

I have 8.1 and it shows literally every device on my network.
Best thing to do is to check the network security on your router. Are you using wpa2psk? Or just wep? Upgrade to the wpa2psk encryption first. Then create a router password that is uncrackable with lots of numbers and digits.. mine is crazy long,,
l56:PO(^&ouihfg%idfG^%^ojF&":FDDG354
or something like that. Make sure its basically uncrackable with brute force. After that it's safe to assume your network is "more or less" secure. Just make sure to revoke any ips given to questionable devices while your in the router settings.
If you continue to see the phone then I'd ask around the house to see if maybe someone handed out the password to a friend or something? Maybe it was a fluke?

I use wpa2psk for router encryption. The phone never showed up on my router's page showing it's connected devices. It only showed up on my laptop under network devices. So it's like it was connected to my laptop but not my router, maybe. I'm not really that computer savvy to know what's going on for sure. I know just enough to be dangerous. I would have never noticed the phone if I wasn't trying to get my printer/scanner to scan something and turn it into a jpg file on my laptop.
My router's password is so long and nonsensical that when a guest sees it they usually just decide to not bother connecting to my home network. I believe it's 64 characters long.
That's weird, I just now checked again and the phone is back but this time it's listing it as an LG-D415 phone. The MAC address is 88:c9:d0:a8:05:b1 and I checked my router, nothing with that MAC address is connected to my router. What is going on here? Now it's gone before I can even finish this paragraph.
What is "w7_tmo_us"? That was the device name listed. I googled it and it looks like it's a config for an LG phone.

I just went into my router and blocked access to that MAC address just to make myself feel better.

Does it go away when you disable your wireless adapter?

I don't know, I've only seen it those two times now and each time it only seems to stay on there for less than a minute. I haven't tried anything yet but next time I'll try that.

I just want to be clear as to what I'm saying is going on. When I open Windows Explorer on my laptop and click on "Network" I see...
Computer (1) TOSHIBA3 (That's what I called my laptop)
Media Devices (1) TOSHIBA3 (I assume this is also my laptop)
Network Infrastruture (1) Xtreme N GIGABIT Router
Phone (1) w7_tmo_us
