Bad Modem? (Read 546 times)

How can you tell when your modem is going bad?  I have an old Speedstream 4100 that I've been using for close to 10 years.  My isp is ATT and at first I thought maybe they were throttling Youtube because videos would load super slow or sometimes they'd just lose connection altogether and I'd have to refresh the page to continue.  Later a lot of other sites started loading slow too.  One night I decided to try and turn the modem off and back on to see if that would help.  I let it stay off for over a half hour and when I tried to turn it back it on it wouldn't connect.  Sounds weird but all the lights turned green but it had no power light.  This happened over and over again until maybe the 10th try when it worked right and connected again.  I haven't touched it since.  It worked great and was back to its old healthy self.  Now today Youtube is starting to slow down again....

I have no idea if my speed problems are really modem related or if its just a coincidence but it's an oddly timed coincidence.  It doesn't usually affect my Quake play but I have had a game or two with some serious lag.  Usually I'm good though.  When I test my internet speed at speedtest.net it comes back perfectly normal, even during the worst of the problems before I initially turned off my modem.  Do I need a new modem?

10 years is a long time for a modem.If you can hold on for awhile..I've an at&t 7550 modem I can mail you. Worked great when I had at&t. I'm not working right now so I don't have the postage.. But I should have it in a week or so...

It's missing the base stand..but otherwise it's in great shape..  i never had a problem with it and it never overheated..

Yea 10 years is a long time for a modem.  But I think how modems are used accross the pond are different to how they are used here.

Here the company providing the internetz send you out a modem/router which tends to be substandard with speed limitations.  Then refuse to give you the log in details so you can get a better modem

Really, you'd just send me a modem?  Wow, I think I may have stumbled upon the best clan in Quake.  You guys are awesome!  I wouldn't feel right about you just giving it to me though.  You've got to let me pay you something for it.  I found one on ebay for $20 but I figure yours probably has a better chance of working so you've got to let me pay you at least that much.  bit.ly/1iuZbpX  Message me an address and I'll pop a check in the mail.  Thanks Swampy!
