I played QL several years ago. For CTF, as I was learning the ropes everyone told me to defend the flag. So, now that I've started playing again I do a lot of defense, especially if we're losing and/or the other team is close to cap.
People start getting mad because I'm "camping".
Is it something that's looked down on?

Yer not camping..Yer Defending!! It amazes me how many people whine because they can't stroll away with the flag.. lmao It's also funny to listen to a team whine after a big loss, and the main reason was they did not defend... 5 man team should have 1-2 defending..1 in middle..and 2 to try for the flag. A lot of CTF maps are set up for defenders..plenty of health, armour and ammo right in front of you. Flag defense is a very good position for new players to play..You really need to be a good strafe runner and LG'er to run the flag. A good defender can make or break a game. ExPlOITeR can probably post some tips, as he's an excellent defender..

Every team needs good defenders, they make the game If your already getting them mad,you now they are getting frustated. And thats a good thing to do with your opponent. Swamp has totally right.

Well here is what I'd like to clear out. When I started QL a few years ago the word camping wasnt invented to quake. However I realized since I had a break and came back lots of clowns shouting 'CAMPER!!!' Camping I see as idling on one spot waiting like 50 seconds for an enemy to pass by...Defense is, actively controlling the flag box. That means, low/high left and right entrance's. As long your doing that your not camping Just my 2 cents.

The only game-type where camping is bad is CA, and that's not because it's a "cheap" technique but because it leaves your teammates (and you, as soon as they're dead) in an inferior position. As for CTF, there is not such thing as camping, since your job is to keep the flag safe, you NEED to stay in the area to prevent anyone to come in. That being said, I feel that "static" camp is much more for mid-field defence (where you're usually have a large open area)(staying at rail spawn on Trouble Waters for example) than base defence. For more advanced and mobile defence, have look at this video (and look at the description on the youtube page):
It's a random training match but Q50 is a really good defender (UK national team).

Thanks, I feel better. I really prefer defending because I find it easy but also helpful. Though, I'm desperatly afraid that if I keep up this streak I'm going to jump to tier 4 and get smoked.

I, as a long time CTF defender feel that every map should spawn proxie mines at a minimum of 10 feet from the flag..

I hate mines...at least when it happens to me. I can't count the number of times I've died because I've had the volume off or too low.
But it is nice when you can have a chance to gear up, mines are great for that.

As I usually play instaCTF only at this moment, when you def, they all call you camper because in insta, one shot = one instant kill. When Iam in the mood, i can def like crazy, when not, they all are just killing me lol so I change the tactics and leave defending to someone else. Patience is the key I guess, try not to rush all over the map with rambo style all the time ( go in, frag everyone, steal flag, get back ). Because it usually does not work, except if youre playing against weaker players. Then you can do whatever you want lol. Like swampy said, if they loose, they whine how nobody in theirs team didnt defending, if they win, the other team call them campers. Happens all the time If you find yourself good at defending, do it if it suits you. Just dont dig up yourself in one position in the map.

I don't even have a bind for proxie mines...I don't see it as a gun that should be in Quake, just like the BFG.

Just scrol with your mouse Only played like once or twice with the mines, and i liked putting them on someones back and look him run around, pieppieppiep pufff But just do wath your good at,and if that is getting much kils with camp on a spot then just do it! Everyone has something where hes best at,and if yours defending just perfectionise it. Learn to be an awesome defender and lots of teams will want you as flag defender:)

Feels like this is a bit late to the party, but... Here's my opinions on camping and mines. Camping: not really existent in CTF / iCTF, it's just good defence/ tactics, no matter your position Mines: Useful for defence, but gets annoying when you meet guys on offence who think they should abuse it... but I'm still for it, lots of fun deaths to those mines

I don't get the point of accusing one player of camping in a CTF game. Is a team supposed to just leave its flag unattended? I rarely join CTF servers so I usually have poor knowledge of the maps. In this case I think that wandering around the map isn't smart at all, just nail your ass near the flag and gradually discover how the map is designed.

yea true, CTF and iCTF does not have camp in it.. cause when a teammate sits in a deserted spot waiting for a lonely soul to pass by for just 1 kill per minute, thats called being real dumb..
theres a flag, enemy wants your flag, you protect it.. as long as you watch over the exits and actually defending it, you ain't camping..
as for leveling up, best to not just stick to defending.. one thing I found out about ALL the games like quake and other co-ops.. is that if you do EVERY possible position, role, etc.. you will also improve the one you are best at, cause you know how other positions/roles act or how those players think.. whats the saying, know your enemy? xD
