In a way I feel bad about advertising this game here, since it's the reason why I play less Quake recently. But honestly it's the best multiplayer FPS I played since Quake 3/Quake Live, I would have felt bad otherwise if you didn't knew how good it is You can create your account here (<= following this link and rank up to lvl6 will make me rich, thank you!). Tribes is a CTF oriented game (even if it also includes game types like catpure-and-hold or TDM) with an high emphasis on movement: the idea is, thanks to a combination of jet-pack and frictionless boots, to gain speed jumping up from an hill to another, as shown in this video: (it's not really skilled gameplay but I think it shows well the mechanic of what we call "skying") Actually, if Tribes is a "fast FPS" it is in a slightly different way than Quake is, meaning that if you can go at 300km/h or more and sometimes give yourself a very nice adrenaline rush dodging mines and grabbing the flag at high speed, it also gives a slow ethereal feeling when you fly. Anyway, the gameplay is pretty rich, asking for teamplay and strategy and good prediction from the player since weapons are not hit-scan. Nice video here, after watching it you won't be useless on a server: The good point being: IT'S FREE! You can pay to increase the speed you earn XP or directly buying stuff, but 1/ except for useless skins there is no paying exclusive content, you can unlock everything being a non-paying player (assuming you play a lot) and furthermore 2/ the starting equipment is pretty strong. Actually, even if I unlocked all classes and lots of weapons, 60% of the time I play with the three initial classes mostly running their basing setups. Still if you want to try the game I'll gladly give you advice on what to unlock and what not depending on how you play, since there are some pretty useful upgrades. So that's it. Great game! Definitely worth a try! And a nice frag video, parce que vous le valez bien: (my id is as always "epikt", but if you create your account following the link I gave it should automatically make you following me and alert me so I can follow you back)

Already posted in the other "missing" topic, but i say it here too. Im also playing with Tribes on London servers, mostly CTF (for starters, its worth playing a lot of TDM then Capture & Hold, to learn the different weapon mechanics). Im rank 27 (max is 50), so im not newb, if you feel like trying the game, dont hesitate to add me to your friendlist, ill friend you back and can give you useful tips just as Epikt said, mostly concerning heavy classes. Im playing mostly Doombringer, a heavy flag defender.
Quakers always perform well in Tribes, imagine Quake plasma gun with a lot slower opponents. Its a massacre. If you are good with LG and plasma in Quake, youll be king in Tribes. The game is MUCH faster than Quake if you are skiing, but ground movement is a LOT slower. A properly dodging Quaker can kill even much higher ranked, more experienced Tribes player (been there, done that).
One thing: If you like the game, you want to play it for some time, consider paying a tiny bit of money. Buy the cheapest package. Any first purchase will give you a permanent +50% exp gain bonus. Exp is used to unlock weapons and other gear, that boost is really nice for the 8 euros i paid.

What a coincidence, I'm also rank 27. (I sent you an invite, I'm playing in London too) Have you try flag defence with a soldier? I played doombringer a lot, it took me some time to get used to the soldier but now I prefer this class. You trade your passive defences and your great tankability with mobility and versatility: maybe not as efficient when there's a lot of disrupt and spam, but much more enjoyable overall. The technique is simple: you weaken the capper with assault rifle (if you have time for it) and you stop him with a proximity grenade (=> LOADS of air-shot medals ;D ) or bodyblock him. Proxi throwing is tricky and requiers some practice, but it's easier than it looks (and is very rewarding when you begin to land it). Still, I remain a heavy player, I love my jugg, there's not such thing as being a fat bastard dealing death from above Not fan of the brute though, I only used it to play base defence on Crossfire (as a HoF you should know how annoying it is to be constantly harass from behind, so I watch your back) but I bough the heavy bolt launcher so I guess now I'll do the job with doombringer. I play a little pathfinder too, I'm a half-decent capper on most maps. Not really good at chasing, but I'm slowly getting better. I also started to play raider. I don't like the arx buster but the grenade launcher is great (what's fun with this weapon is, even if you don't kill a lot, what a mess it causes!). I haven't bought the plasma yet (actually I haven't any plasma weapon), looks like more of a deathmatch weapon than something usefull for disrupt. But I'm thinking of buying it to counter those heavies camping the bridge on Arx Novena (I hate those guys!), maybe it will be easier than with soldier. I bought a booster pack when the game was released. Some gold, x2 XP for one month. I'm happy with it. But if I started now and haven't unlocked anything yet I think I'll go for the starter pack, it's a good deal.

I have a different playstyle, superheavy, Titan, chaingun, safety third.
It seems we can forget about playing HoF next week, a new patch coming, reducing CG/CC ammo by more than 30%, Freefall perk will make players immune to splat damage, byebye Superheavy. But we gain a 0.1 second faster reloading and 8% harder hitting Titan. DMB will be useless as HoF on some maps. If this happens, i think ill be back to Quake.

Are you sure about safe fall making cappers immune from super heavy? On the change log I read: The Safefall perk now starts at 50% falling and splat damage reduction, and is upgraded to immunity from all falling and splat damage. In addition, its final unlock has been increased from 80% vehicle run over damage reduction to immunity from vehicle run over damage. I understand this as no damage when falling (vertical), hitting a wall (horizontal, splat) and vehicle runs when at the moment damage reduction is only partial. As far as I know safe fall does not currently reduce super heavy damage (nor force fields, which I believe works by the same mechanic), I think it would have been explicitly written if the patch changed that. And actually if a capper wants to trade reach for safe fall, ie choose not to grab the flag by passing next to the HoF but to crash on me, lose all his momentum only in order to not die, I'm happy and he won't score. The benefit of safe fall is not on duel with HoF, but when chased by a shrike.
