I'm back from the void that competitive TF2 is to announce the biggest thing I have ever arranged! Even though I've done nothing yet other than write this post, I want you to get hyped for a duel challenge extraordinaire to celebrate the release of our beloved but patched-to-death game on Steam. Prepare for an insane amount of duels!
I'm proud to announce the tournament that Quake Live needs, but doesn't deserve:

The Steam Release Maiden Voyage Duel Challenge!

Signups close October 24th, Tournament starts a week after.

Now we could use some super hard to remember abbreviation like TSRMVDC but that's just ridiculous so let's just go with SRDC - Steam Release Duel Challenge. Just so even swampy can remember the name.


So now that I have created a certain amount of hype, let me explain this thing.

As you probably know already, Quake Live is going to be available on Steam and I want to celebrate that as I always thought that Quake Live needed and deserved a Steam release. The release is announced, there is no fix release date though. That means that I don't even know when this Duel Challenge is even going to happen. I just know that it is going to happen "soon" (® Valve). The Duel Challenge is going to happen. Maybe not immediatly after the release, but at least at some point!


Who can play?

Basically anyone. drunks, chills, your friends. Just invite everyone that you kind of know that plays Quake Live. Or make someone play Quake Live!
I already have a bunch of TF2 players that are not particularly familiar with Quake Live but they want to play some duels against players of their skill level. I expect a lot of players that we as the "pros" may call "noobs" or "shitters". A duel tournament that even swampy could stand a chance in? What is this sorcery?


What do we play for?

Primarily for fun, as always. Furthermore, to celebrate the Steam release.
But mainly...FOR THE PRIZES OF COURSE!
There will be prizes. I want it to be many, but most importantly, not only for the winners. I think kanzo has won enough Humble Bundles.
Prizes will also be given out to some of the losers! They will be given out for special achievements during the tournament. Think of things like most gauntlet kills and stuff like that. My ears are all open for suggestions, so please throw them at me!
However, I can not provide a ton of prizes all by myself since I'm a soon to be uni student with money problems all over the place. I don't want to be stingy but I probably need your help. Anyone that can provide a prize, whatever it may be, you are welcome to do so. Humble Bundles, coupons for alcohol, kittens, your undying love...whatever you can provide is awesome and appreciated! Not only by me, but also by the players that are just going to play a gauntlet only tournament just to get a locke of martin's beard.
The winner will also receive some kind of badge next to his name so everyone can see that you won this tournament. Not approved by any admin that can actually do that, but you're going to get it for sure. Put some trust in wook!


Rules? Maps?

There will be rules and there will also be maps. However, I don't want to decide them now and I'm open for suggestions, especially for the maps. The duels will probably be played with the standard ruleset. The format of the tournament depends on the amount of signups. It would be awesome to have a tournament with group stages so even the worst player gets to play more than two duels (in a double elimination format he is out of the tournament if he loses his first two duels).
A bunch of rules are set: Don't be a h65nUnz . Be nice. Have fun.


Anything else?

Yes. Share the hype! I want this to get as much attention as possible! You don't have to ask the strange person in your friendslist that has been there forever but never even talked to you, but you can at least ask your friends.
I'm planning on getting this casted, I want it too be covered as much as possible! The casts don't have to be super serious, it's fine as long as the viewership doesn't fall asleep. I will probably be casting some of the games myself.

I've been practicing, and I'd love to participate as long as my ping is reasonable. Any idea which server(s) will be utilized or is it a per-matchup sort of thing?

Best server for both parties I suppose. We can use British or French servers if any Americans want to participate.

I've connected to German and British servers with 80-100ms ping, but I am on the east coast of US. I cannot say the same for others. If things are a bit out of control, we'll just have to set up something for us westerners.

Still need suggestions for mappool and the awards that win prizes (see "What do we play for?")

Speaking of awards - just like you said, pick anything crazy you might think about. For instance scoring an 'Excellent' medal. I'm not sure how this is mathematically possible, but i certainly had some. Some cumulative awards are also possible - like top scorer, top damage dealer - stuff like that. Just think what would be cool and i'll gladly write the code to fetch and sum up those automatically, so you don't even have to use a calculator

As for the maps there are few things to consider:
1) some maps are certainly overplayed to the point of ppl getting sick of em, like aerowalk, bloodrun, campgrounds - which i wouldn't recommend on picking, but then again different ppl might consider them must-have classics.
2) there are certainly underplayed decent maps which i'd love to see and play myself - like battleforged and dismemberment.
3) last but not least there is an ongoing King of the Chills competition to which the pool is Cure, Fuse, McSarges, Silence, Sinister which you might want to avoid for whatever reason. Although not all the maps are being picked actively as one could've imagined.

Overall if your goal is to go full-democratic you might aswell just strawpoll it.

Coding sounds excellent, I'll think about what exactly is worth a price :) Feel free to suggest, I'll take anything into consideration

I am aware that some maps are overplayed, but there are a few people that a really new to QL, some of them have maybe played Q3A at some point in their childhood and remember like two maps roughly. Some people might have just jumped in a duel server once or twice and just know "standard" maps. Either way, maps will most likely consist of a few classics and a few underplayed maps. Dismemberment is definitely one of my favorites and will most likely end up being in the mappool.
